What we all must cultivate to attain it: faith. Why we should want to cultivate it: to protect ourselves and those we love from anxiety, disconnection, and fear. Fear shows up as attempts to control; faith shows up as surrender (giving over to a higher power, not giving up). For example, a mother grabs the wrist of her child to stop him from running wildly into the street because she is afraid a car drive by. On the other hand, an athlete may pray before a competition to earnestly ask a higher power to watch over, guide, and protect her through the contest. As a player and a coach myself, I prepare, *control the controllables*, and strive valiantly… the rest, I put in God’s hands, trusting His ways are the best possible ways, regardless of outcome. Even when I lose a match, get injured, and or make mistakes, I win because I learn, grow, and strive to redeem. > ## For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. > > ## — Isaiah 55:8-9 Math and science point to truth of a matter; faith and spirituality point to why the truth matters. David Hume, the renowned philosopher, might be right: “you can’t derive an ought from an is;” however, intangible morality can’t be completely separated physical reality. Some matters matter more than other matters. Although we may argue, disagree, and fight about what matters most to us personally and communally, every human being believes in redemptive actions, disciplines, or practices that bring her or him peace. — The more differences we look for, the more similarities we find. The more similarities we find, the more common ground we discover. ## From common ground, we climb towards higher ground together rather than alone and isolated. Connection \> rejection Connection → protection Shared redemption stems from true connection. —— *During a hike with one of my best friends, we discussed faith. While stepping on slippery rocks, avoiding mud, and striving upwards toward a better view of the city below, our conversation traversed through various beliefs, philosophies, and religions. Thoughtfully expressing each one’s essence, we conversed: “Islam emphasizes discipline (my friend stated because his grandfather embodies Muslim practices daily). Buddhism values inner peace, which followers of its truths call nirvana. Christianity and Judaism, in similar ways to each other and the former two, stress the importance of relationships, obedience to God, and adoption of responsibility.”* **At the heart of each and every doctrine, sacrifice matters.** Are we willing to give up what we hedonically want now for what we truly want down the road? Are we willing to voluntarily put the well-being of those we love above our own self-serving pleasure? Are we willing, on a daily basis, to focus on the divine and those in need? We \> me Us \> I **God \> ego** > ## He must become greater; I must become less. > > ## — John 3:30 Theology, philosophy, and psychology remain inextricably connected. Theology asks, “Is there a God?” Philosophy then inquires, “If so, what does that mean \[to me\]?” Psychology then questions, “Given His existence and what that means \[to me personally\], how should I act?” In a circular flywheel, these studies challenge individuals to act in such a way to please the Almighty rather than men and women here on earth. Each field contains deep questions to consider — ones whose answers affect our behaviors, justifications, and perspectives. Once we begin to live for something greater than ourselves, apprehension gives want to anticipation. We look for how obstacles are shaping us rather than stopping us. We view challenges as helpful instead of hurtful. A bigger-picture outlook creates a purpose-driven mindset; in turn, courage galvanizes us over caution. “It’s not about you… you were created by God and for God; until you understand that, life will never make sense… Knowing your purpose gives meaning to your life… Without God, life has no purpose; without purpose, life has no significance… God shaped you for a purpose… You were put on this earth to make a contribution… Life is a test and a trust… Nothing matters more than knowing God’s purposes for your life, and nothing can compensate for not knowing them.” — Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life > *At the top of the mountain, clouds covered the city’s skyline. What could have been a spectacular landscape of buildings in the horizon and voluptuous trees in the foreground turned out to be a seemingly endless canvas of gray.* > > *I smiled, though, because I was reminded of the definition of faith: to be sure of what we hope for and certain of **what we do not see**.* *As we made our way down, we lost and redeemed our footing several times. We talked about memorable pastimes, those we loved and why, those we missed and why, those we strived to be like and why. We passed strangers: a couple hiking together with oversized backpacks heading to Georgia several states away, another husband and wife with trekking poles who asked us about the conditions they should expect ahead, and a lone traveler who just finished a bike ride across America, stopping every 82 miles, before casually deciding she would like to finish her journey with a “quick hike.”* *By the time we arrived at the bottom, dirty and parched, we shared a physical exhaustion yet a spiritual redemption.* A throughline among all beliefs, all faiths, and all religions remains redemption through sacrifice. For every path we choose, we must abandon another, usually forever (Joan D. Vinge). For every relationship we prioritize, we must forego another, at least for a while. For every endeavor we commit to, we must abstain from another, typically until we see it through. ### “If God brought you to it, He will see you through it.” Call to Action: go on a journey with a loved one. Find a trail to hike, a path to run, or a mountain to climb together. Wander and wonder. Get lost in conversation and found in shared beliefs. Look for common ground. Seek higher ground, together. Once done, write about your favorite takeaways and what resonated with you most from the dialogue and exploration. Is there anything you would like to let go of or pursue now that you adventured away and returned anew? > ## If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. > > ## — Luke 9:23 Our voluntary, sacrificial responsibilities become our crosses. Our up-and-down journeys connect us with like-hearted relationships. Discipline, inner peace, and redemption come from our shared belief a higher power.
